You don’t need a fortune teller – God’s got a Plan for You

Play episode

I was talking to someone the other day who told me that they had been to see a psychic medium with a friend, because they were curious about what might happen to them in the future, and their friend had some big decisions coming up and wanted some clarity about which path they should take.

Now this person I was speaking to was quite skeptical about the whole thing – but their friend who had taken them along to the session was quite into it. The use of fortune telling or mediums has been normalized and shown in a lot of movies, from the Wizard of Oz (so remember when Dorothy sought the advice of a shady fortune teller named Professor Marvel before the tornado sent everything flying) to the Matrix – which has a startling mix of concepts ranging from Christianity to Gnosticism to Buddhism.

The Matrix is a movie that was released in 1999.

It’s a futuristic sci-fi movie where humans have been enslaved by intelligent machines for energy generation and are unknowingly being distracted by a computer simulated reality known as ‘The Matrix’.

The movie follows a computer programmer and hacker known as Neo as he becomes aware of the truth, chooses the red pill, and joins in the rebellion against slavery with a small collection of other people who have also been rescued from the illusion of the matrix.

Neo, Morpheus (who is the leader of the rebellion) and a bunch of rebels travel around in a flying ship called the Nebuchadnezzar and travel back and forth between the simulated reality of the Matrix and the real world, dodging the Agents – who are men in suits with the power to kill not only the simulated version of a person but their body outside the Matrix too.

Now Morpheus believes that Neo is ‘the One’ – the person who has been prophesied to end the war with the machines and free humanity, but there’s one crucial scene in the movie where the crew enters the matrix and places themselves in danger to visit a prophet known as the Oracle, who gives Neo a warning about a choice he must make.

Which, when you think about it, is just like the lady I was talking to the other day.

She and her friend were looking for answers too. I think, deep down, all of us are curious about what the future might hold.

Sometimes that curiosity is because, like Neo and Morpheus in the Matrix, we want to make the right decisions and we’re worried about making the wrong decisions. Sometimes we’re curious because we’d like to take a short cut to where we’re going, and sometimes we want to avoid trouble.

Leviticus chapter 19 verse 31 instructs the Israelites very clearly to not defile themselves by turning to mediums or to those who consult the spirits of the dead. Deuteronomy chapter 18 verses 10 to 15 instructs the Israelites to not practice fortune telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. As followers of Jesus, we should not be having anything to do with these practices.

Interestingly enough, the bible does have quite a bit to say about our lives and what is in store for each of us, and that has nothing to do with using any of the practices I just mentioned. Jeremiah chapter 1 verse 5 says ‘I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb.

Before you were born I set you apart.’ Ephesians chapter 1 verse 4 says God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world and the writer of Psalm 139 verse 16 says that God saw me before I was born.

Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.’ Ephesians chapter 2 verse 10 says we are God’s workmanship, created in Jesus Christ to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians chapter 4 verse 1 tells us to ‘live a life worthy of the calling you have received.

So we were not only set apart before we were born, but we were created specifically for the works that God has planned for us, and those plans were recorded in a book.

So God has a plan for your life already formed and laid out – before you were even born. He gave you irrevocable gifts that were perfectly matched to that plan for you.

When we align ourselves, our gifts and our talents, with God’s plan and we rely on the Holy Spirit to guide our next steps… unbelievable things start to happen.

And there’s no need to consult a psychic or a horoscope to find out what’s going to happen – because the bible promises in Romans chapter 8 verse 28 that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

But notice – it’s not just about loving God – if we want to grab hold of this promise we need to both understand God’s calling and his purpose for us and to walk in that calling.

There is definite action needed on our part. Proverbs chapter 3 verses 5 and 6 tell us to seek God’s will in all we do, and he will direct our paths.

Let’s face it – he knows what the plan is – so who better to guide our steps – and we do that in prayer.

When you think about it, how amazing is it that God’s plan for me included making this exact video – and he knew that you would be watching it at this very moment – because every moment for both of us has been laid out in advance and written in God’s book. Second Peter chapter 1 verse 10 says we should make every effort to confirm our calling and election – so if you don’t know yet what it is that you have been called by God to do – it’s time to pray and seek some answers – because I know from experience you won’t feel whole until you’ve found out what it is and you’ve started walking in it.

Until next time, blue skies!
